Join experienced Coastguard skipper Simon Marshall for an essential session on bar crossing. With years at sea and countless rescues under his belt, Simon will walk you through the risks involved in a bar crossing, what to consider when making a decision to cross or not, how to prepare your boat, plan your route and then how to helm your boat through the bar zone. Whether you're new to bar crossings or looking to sharpen your skills, this practical, and casual talk will help you stay safer on the water.

A lifelong fishing enthusiast, Malcolm Bell grew up exploring both salt and freshwater environments with his adventurous family. In 1982, he founded The Complete Angler fishing store, focusing on salmon and fly fishing, and went on to run fly fishing schools, casting days, and canal fishing trips. He also developed innovative fishing rods for new techniques and has fished extensively across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands targeting marlin, tuna, and other hard-fighting species. Today, as a self-confessed fanatic angler, Malcolm shares his deep knowledge and hands-on experience with fellow anglers and newcomers alike—making him the perfect guide for this demo session.

Environment Canterbury and Maritime New Zealand work together to keep Canterbury’s waters safe, clean, and well-connected in emergencies. At the expo, boating safety officers from both organisations, along with search and rescue officers from Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre, will share practical advice on how to stay safe on the water and what to do if things go wrong. Learn how to call for help, what gear to carry, and how to be ready for the unexpected. Visit their sites in Zone E to ask questions, pick up giveaways, enter a prize draw and a colouring competition, explore a liferaft, experience regular inflatable lifejacket demonstrations and a VR experience. You’ll also find the RCCNZ booth for beacon registration and advice in the Adventure Gear marquee.
